Let’s face it, Stewart Robertson could announce that Rangers have posted profits of £100million and you would still have the usual financial experts from across the city claiming that we were heading for administration, however, much of what the managing director said in an interview with Sky Sports this week was encouraging for a group of fans that have been through everything over the last ten years.

Due to Covid-19, it has perhaps, taken a little longer than expected but it speaks volumes for the directors and individuals who have supported the club financially that we are in a good place with Robertson explaining that, even if we don’t win the league, there will be no need for a firesale or desperate rush to cut costs:

“We have always said we will sell the right player at the right price and value when it’s the right time for Rangers.

“We are building something long term. If you look at the history of Scottish football, we won’t win the league every year.

“We are now looking that it’s very probable that we will be in a profitable situation this season. Going forward, we will be sustainable. That is very much the business model we have in place now.

“That is what we are intending from this season forward. That is where we want to be. It’s the business plan and the strategy. It’s been discussed by the board and signed off.

“That’s where Rangers have to be. We can’t have ourselves in a position where we go back to the situation we had ten years ago.”

It is absolutely the correct thing to do to not count on or budget for Champions League money, if we were to start paying inflated wages or spending outwith our means the club would still rely on money from investors and, long-term, that simply isn’t sustainable.

Yes, if we qualify, some of the money should be used to attract players and it would give the manager more freedom in the transfer market but the model should always be about buying low and selling high.

Mateusz Zukowski is a great example of this, we could easily have gone out and spent some of the money that we made from the sale of Nathan Patterson on a back-up right-back but, with a fully functioning scouting department, we shouldn’t have to – that’s the point.

Do the hard yards behind the scenes and the risk is reduced, we would have been aware of Zukowski long before Patterson broke our transfer record and moved to the Premier League.

Nirvana will always be a successful team both on and off the pitch, we aren’t there yet in terms of consistently winning trophies and posting profits but we’re getting there, we have a club we can be proud of and we’re in safe hands – rewind to ten years ago and it’s hard to believe just how far we’ve come.
