Rangers captain James Tavernier reckons John Hartson was wrong to criticise the Ibrox side for getting carried away in the wake of December’s win over Celtic.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Hartson said earlier this week that the Gers blew the chance to win the title after beating the Hoops 1-0 before the winter break.

Since the return from our January training camp our form has been well below expected standards and a mile away from that Ibrox performance, but the captain believes Hartson’s assessment of the situation is wrong.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Tavernier said:

I think it’s inaccurate to say we got carried away.

With any footballer or fan, if you win you are going to be happy. It’s one of those things. Celtic were celebrating when they beat us at the start of the season.

It’s the same with us. Players like myself and Andy Halliday, the lads who’d been here a while, to get that win . . . it had been a long time.

It was a weight off. It’s your rival.

You can talk about the consistency before the game but a lot is about who wants it on the day.

Clearly Rangers will have to play far better than we have been recently to get any sort of result at Celtic Park tomorrow, but Tavernier will know that more than anyone.

We haven’t won a single match so far in March but we have a brilliant chance to end the month on a high and spark a frenetic end to the Scottish Premiership season.

If we put three points on the board, have no doubt, it will put serious pressure on Celtic and Neil Lennon.
