Midfielder Steven Davis has admitted winning the league looks beyond Rangers this season, but insists progress is being made, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Falling ten points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this weekend with just eight games remaining, it appears that our hunt for major honours this term is all but over.

Being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen last Tuesday night was the final blow and it’s likely the club are now already planning ahead for next season.

Davis admits it’s not what fans are looking for, but still believes progress is being made under Steven Gerrard.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the veteran midfielder said:

We know the demands. The fans are paying good money to come and see us and they expect us to win.

We expect to go out there and win but unfortunately the goals we are conceding are really hurting us. They are poor goals to give away and we have to take responsibility together.

We know this can be a tough place to play but there are big enough characters in the dressing-room to handle that and get us through this period.

From the start of the season you’d certainly say progress has been made. It’s maybe not been the progress we’d have wanted because we want to be challenging for trophies and that isn’t the case.

You are expected to challenge for trophies here and unfortunately it doesn’t look like that will happen this season.

Gerrard’s European run was a real highlight of the season and it looks like we’ll have enough about us to at least finish in second above Aberdeen, which is better than the last two years, so it’s clear we are on the right road.

In the truly big matches this term though we have come up short in all but one, failing to replicate the performance against Celtic in December on a consistent basis.

Davis’ words ring very true and that kind of honest is needed if we are to analyse where things have gone wrong this season to improve over the summer ahead of a new campaign.

Can Gerrard find the consistent winning blend we need?
