Veteran Rangers captain David Weir has become the bookies favourite to take over the St Johnstone hot seat vacated by former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes.

McInnes left Perth to try his luck in the English Championship with Bristol City. The former Ranger has done a great job with St Johnstone and has left them in fifth position in the SPL.

Davie Weir has hardly featured so far this season due to injury. He is back fit again but faces stiff competition for a place in defence with Goian and Bocanegra doing well at the back, and Kyle Bartley also due back from injury.

At 41 years of age, Weir could be ready for his first job in management. He could possibly even carry on playing as a player-manager, for this season at least, should he take the job, or indeed by offered the job.

Weir was in the starting line-up for Rangers’ midweek victory over English giants Liverpool. He has been a great servant to the club and has given us the best of his latter years in the game, but it could just be time for him to move on.
