Former Rangers star Steven Davis is getting next to no action at Southampton this season.

Is it time to make a move for him and use his experience to bring Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox project to the next level?

The international break is usually a distraction for players at the top level but for Davis these trips with Northern Ireland have been the main event having failed to fight his way into Mark Hughes’ plans this term.

The 33-year-old, rated at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, has played just six minutes of top-flight football for Saints, with his only start of the season coming in the League Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Still captain of the club, he’s enjoyed a stellar career there since leaving Rangers in 2012, but now could be the right time to bring him home to Ibrox with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Gerrard has plenty of midfield talent at his disposal but Davis is arguably a level above most already at the club and still has a good few seasons left in the tank.

We know he has a winning mentality having lifted eight trophies in Rangers colours previously and it’s a mentality we need if we are to challenge for major honours once again.

Adding to his 211 career club appearances for the Gers could be the best thing for the club and for the player himself.
