In the early stages of the 2019/20 season it looked as though Steven Gerrard had finally discovered the perfect option to provide balance to Ryan Kent on the left-hand side of the Rangers attack.

That Sheyi Ojo had come from the same club suggested that we had had our eye on him ever since the Liverpool youth coach arrived to take charge in his first job as manager and a blistering start made it look like we had found the answer.

With five goals and four assists in 14 games at the beginning of the season including an absolute screamer against Feyenoord, it was understandable that there were calls for his loan deal to be turned into a permanent one at the earliest opportunity, however, with just three assists from the middle of September to the end of the season, it would have been money wasted.

He was earning rave reviews in the press and was seen as a success given the start that he made to life at Ibrox, there was no indication that his form was about to fall off a cliff – Vital Rangers leading the calls for him to be signed before he became to expensive.

Now 24, and off the back of a campaign where he scored just one goal for Millwall in the Championship, he faces a real crossroads in his career, despite all the potential in the world, he just hasn’t been able to consistently find the level that he is capable of producing.

On paper, on a free transfer now that he has been released by Liverpool, he would be a decent option for Rangers, however, what he has in talent, he lacks in work rate, determination and mental strength, the jersey is simply too big for him and I doubt if he will ever find himself playing in the knockout stages of a major European tournament again in his career, some players just don’t realise what they have got until it’s too late.
