James Sands has become Rangers latest US import, following in a line of relatively successful Americans to have played at Ibrox.

The USMNT player departs New York City FC and MLS to join the Scottish champions in an 18 month loan deal which contains a purchase option, giving the Gers effective first refusal.

21-year old Sands becomes the first signing of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s reign at Ibrox.

The Ibrox boss was quoted on his new acquisition on the club’s official website, stating:

“James is a player who I have been aware of for some time. His versatility was a big attraction and I’ve been impressed with his attitude and mentality in the games that I have watched recently.”

Options

It is clear that Rangers have been attracted to the US international due to his perceived quality and ability to cover different positions on the pitch. Immediately he offers competition in central defence and midfield, as well as cover for James Tavernier following the departure of Nathan Patterson.

In terms of the signing, Rangers have done very well and negotiated a structure that works for them. Sporting director Ross Wilson will be very happy that Sands short-term future is guaranteed at Ibrox over the next year and half. Beyond that, the club have a very important purchase option included in the deal which also throws up the potential of an instant sale and profit, should the situation arise.

With USA caps and a Gold Cup win to his name as well as a MLS title, the signing of James Sands is an interesting and intriguing capture for Rangers – all the very best to the lad for his career ahead in royal blue.
