Wright better than Jota? If he is given a chance
Statistics can be used, distorted and twisted to suit any agenda but sometimes when they are applied in football they add depth to what we already know and what we can se with our own eyes.
They also throw up the odd surprise from time to time and one of those is that Scott Wright really does deserve to have an extended run in the first team one that, due to Joe Aribo’s African Cup of Nations enforced absence, we could be about to see.
Since Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived at Rangers there has been a notable and well documented shift in how we play and Wright has been one of the beneficiaries, however, it has been Ianis Hagi that has start more often than not on the right-hand side of the attack.
When analyst Patrick Caskie asked for players to compare, his timeline was quickly filled with Old Firm fans and when he was asked to look at Wright and Jota, not may would have expected the following result.

On a basic level Wright has four goals in 21 appearances but in a total of just over 900 minutes, that he doesn’t have any assists is not down to his lack of creativity as shown by Patrick’s graphic, he should also be scoring more goals. When you consider the praise that Jota has been getting that Wright comes out on top in eight out of 12 categories and is only just behind the Celtic forward in the others shows that he deserves a run in the team – he looks like a good player and his numbers are backing that up.
We have ben crying out for a right winger for ages but over the next few weeks, in Aribo’s absence, if Van Bronckhorst gives Wright a chance we might find that the answer has been staring us in the face the whole time.
