We all know that a Rangers shirt will never shrink to fit any player, however, not every player should be assessed against club legends who have previously played the same position.

This season’s perfect example is Scott Wright – although Fashion Sakala is another – where you will hear, frequently, that he isn’t good enough to be a Rangers player.

For a start, his goals per game ratio equates to seven goals in 20 games with three assists making it a goal or assist every two games, this would be a decent return for a player that you had paid decent money for and expect to start every game, never mind one who was signed in exchange with Ross McCrorie and is little more than a back-up.

With two goals and an assist in his last four league games and solid performances in the Europa League, Wright has gradually improved as the season has gone on with calls for the 24-year old to be called up to the senior Scotland set-up having previously been capped at Under-21 level.

Steve Clarke overlooked the pace and creativity of Wright, instead selecting his usual array of full-backs – six at the last count – a decision that the national coach explained via Football Scotland:

“Yeah. There are more boys in your thoughts who you don’t pick. You eventually have to pick a squad.

“I brought Ross Stewart into the last squad as a forward, had a good look at him and it would have been unfair only to pick him for one camp.
