Rangers are interested in signing goalkeeper Zander Clark but, as reported by The Scottish Sun, he is in advanced talks to renew his St Johnstone contract.

Website Football Insider reported on Wednesday that the Gers were keen on signing the Saints number one to replace Wes Foderingham as back-up to Allan McGregor this summer.

Rangers were said to have been in an advantageous position to bring him to Ibrox considering his current deal at McDiarmid Park expires next summer.

However, manager Tommy Wright is keen on signing him up to a new long-term deal, telling The Scottish Sun:

I don’t know where all this has come from. There will be interest in Zander after the season he has had, but at the minute no one has been in contact with the club.

Sometimes nowadays the initial contact is through an agent, but I’m sure if Rangers, Derby or anyone else want him they will speak to us directly.

I sat down face-to-face with Zander and he told me he wanted to sign a new contract, so that is the basis we are continuing to work on.

He has had a very good season but he has to build on that if he wants to get to the very top.

Director of Football Mark Allen and manager Steven Gerrard have made it a priority to sign up the best talent in the country to strengthen the Rangers squad of late.

Clark has been a regular for St Johnstone for a few seasons now and has kept 19 clean sheets this term.

The 26-year-old is considered to be one of the better goalkeepers in the Scottish Premiership and as back-up to McGregor would be a competent choice indeed.

The price of the deal would need to be right, with Rangers looking for good value, but if we can convince him to make the switch to Ibrox it would be prudent of St Johnstone to accept a fee for him this summer.
