This won’t come as a surprise but it has been revealed that Rangers have the oldest average team in the SPFL Premiership.

From renewed contracts to recent team selections, the ‘old guard’ is well intact at Ibrox with the key men of the league title success (and the years that preceded it) still being required to produce the goods.

Part of the line that came from the club last week from Deputy Chairman John Bennett was that it is right to keep a winning team together and to effectively ensure stability but that has its limits. The ‘Rangers performance’ that was lauded in terms of the 0-3 defeat to Napoli had a midfield that consisted of Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis. Those men continue to give their all but in the Champions League at the ages of 33, 30 and 37 respectively, all is not as it should be.

Particularly in midfield, more quality, legs and power is required to replenish an ageing side.

Now it is official with the news that“Rangers have the oldest team in Scottish football, according to data from the CIES Football Observatory.”

“Since the start of the season, the average age of players in the Gers team was 28.42, the highest figure out of any 12 Premiership sides.”

“At the other end of the scale, Aberdeen are the youngest at 25.67, followed by Celtic (26.07) and Hibs (26.31).”

“When broken down to percentage of minutes played by age category, Aberdeen had the highest of under 21s at 23 per cent.”

All this does is underline the fact that there is serious ongoing work required to make Rangers squad as competitive as it should be, as well as not reflecting well on recent transfer windows and the implementation of that business on the pitch.

This should have been sorted out over the last 3 transfer windows
Looks like our board are not believers in speculating to accumulate or building onto winning side
