A round-up of Rangers news from the last couple of days, including take over news, McCoist on his future and Smith on Webster.

Ellis ponders take over bid

After initial discussions, London based property developer Andrew Ellis and his consortium will spend the next two weeks pondering over whether or not to make a bid for Rangers.

Ellis will decide whether or not to bid for Sir David Murray’s 92% stake in the club. Rangers who are £31 million in debt are desperate for a new owner and hope to be able to clear the debt and move forward.

If Ellis does make a bid, and is successful, he will be taking over a club who are in good health, on the pitch at least. With the league almost in the bag, the group will know that there will be a great chance to make money from the Champions League next season.

Hopefully this will be sorted out, and Rangers can get out of the mess they find themselves in. It would be good to sort out the future of out of contract Kris Boyd, as well as the management team, and would also be a boost to not have to sell the likes of Madjid Bougherra and Allan McGregor.

McCoist unsure of future

Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist has said he is no idea of what his future at Ibrox is. Himself and manager Walter Smith are both operating without a contract at the moment, but are hopeful that if Andrew Ellis takesover the club, that both he and Smith will be offered new contracts.

It is uncertain though that even if new owners takeover the club, whether or not they would like to keep the current management team, or whether they would like to bring their own people in.

McCoist would just like the club’s own future to be sorted first and foremost but would obviously like to sign a new contract himself and then tie up the future of Rangers’ big stars like Madjid Bougherra.

Smith: Webster can play a key role next season

Rangers manager Walter Smith has heaped praise on defender Andy Webster, who is currently on loan to Dundee United. The defender’s form at United this season has seen him being recalled to the Scotland squad.

Webster, who won November’s Clydesdale Bank player of the month award, started for Scotland in the recent 1-0 friendly win over Czech Republic. He has found it hard to find form since his move to Rangers from Wigan. He lost a lot of confidence due to injury plus the politics involved in his move from Hearts to Wigan. But this loan move has done him the world of good.

Smith said of Webster: ‘I have been impressed by Andy. He has been captain at Dundee United and, as a loan player, that’s a real accolade. I like to think he can come back with the confidence he had three or four years ago.’

The Rangers boss added: ”I’m not sure of what future any of us will have here but I think putting him out to United has worked well for him. He had a hard period here where, due to contractual situations and his transfer from Hearts to Wigan, he stalled a bit.’
