Charlie McCann struck the right tone when reflecting on his recent Ibrox departure but it is obvious that he feels a sense of unfinished business.

The Northern Ireland senior squad member has swapped Glasgow for Gloucester and England’s League One with the primary aim of making a name for himself at top team level.

Despite having a place in the Rangers squad, McCann was restricted to eight sub appearances this season with his one and only start coming under Giovanni van Bronckhorst back in September.

Reluctantly, he decided a clean break of sorts was required – even if it came with the frustration of having to leave a massive club and a place he quickly learned to love.

McCann recently told the Sunday Mail:

“Eventually I came to a decision. But it was never going to be easy leaving Rangers.”

“If I was just floating around and playing B team games at Rangers, it would have been straightforward. I was close to the first-team. But yet so far away, if you know what I mean?”

“I’ve always said the one thing I want to do in my career is play consistently for Rangers. If I was doing that now, I wouldn’t even be thinking about going anywhere else and I’ll always want to fulfil that ambition in my career, if I can.”

“If I could get back here, and become a Rangers player again, I wouldn’t miss that opportunity.”

Unknown

The move to FGR represents something of an unknown quantity for McCann. He will only know through time if it has been the right decision. Regular game time and prosperity could lead to a better move at a higher level or will things kick on as intended? The dilemma comes from sticking around on the fringes of Michael Beale’s squad or making the jump, almost out of necessity. The latter is one that he feels is the right call even if it may not feel like it now.

Rangers moved to protect the club with the terms of the transfer which could prove to be shrewd business. The rest is very much unknown but best wishes to Charlie McCann in making the next step forward.
