Gers in international transfer boost after target released by Premier League side

|

Steven Gerrard gave Rangers fans some good news this week when he revealed that Ryan Jack had returned to full training, Scott Arfield was progressing nicely and Kemar Roofe should be back next week.

It would also be unsurprising if Scott Wright arrived sooner, rather than later as he fine tunes his squad heading into a pivotal period of the season but there could be a cut-price arrival of a player long since linked with a move to Ibrox.

Max Meyer is a German international, albeit a few years ago, but has just had his Crystal Palace contract cancelled by mutual consent making him instantly available, changed days from being linked with Liverpool.

He’s made just one appearance this season for Roy Hodgson’s side and has struggled to make any sort of impact since arriving from Schalke in 2018 as one of his country’s brightest prospects – it’s safe to say that if he could make his decision again, he wouldn’t be choosing the London based club.

Capable of playing either as an attacking midfielder or in a front three, Meyer could provide a flexibility in Gerrard’s squad where he wouldn’t have to start every game but be able to give respite to key players who will be approaching 60 games by the end of the season.

At a time when finances have to be carefully balanced, being able to attract a player of Meyer’s potential on a short term “try before you buy” deal would avoid spending a decent chunk of the wage bill on a transfer that isn’t guaranteed to be a success – but if it did come off, it would be something of a bargain.
