Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson is adamant that there will be no ‘null and void’ in the SPFL Premiership this year.

He is very confident that there will be no curtailment to the league and in the unlikely event that it does, the precedent set last season means that it must be called in Rangers favour.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he said, ” Well, the only thing that should be null and void is all talk of null and void – even if Neil Doncaster refused to completely rule it out yesterday.”

It won’t happen. I’m convinced the SPFL will try everything in their power to make sure the Premiership is finished.”

“You know how strict they’ve been in terms of the testing, with the top-flight clubs getting done twice a week. They are spending a lot of money on it and they are in their bubbles, so I would be shocked if the SPFL stop the season early. To be clear, I really want the Premiership completed.”

Precedent

The Rangers ‘Hall of Fame’, treble winning captain continued, “But if it were to be called early, they’d need to do the same as they did last season. And that would mean Rangers winning the title because they are so far in front.

“Celtic were 13 points clear, with Rangers having a game in hand last season. This time, even if Celtic win their three games in hand, they’d still be 12 points behind. Anything other than Rangers being awarded the title just wouldn’t be right.”

Ferguson then gave his thoughts on SPFL priorities across the leagues.

“What the SPFL are trying to do is to get enough games played so that if football has to shut down entirely then the Premiership and Championship leaders are either home and hosed or very near to it.”

“It would be the same hope at the foot of the divisions but, to be honest, that’s going to be very difficult because it’s so tight down there that any number of teams could be relegated. That fight looks like it will last all season.”

“At the top end, though, Rangers are out in front and there really wouldn’t be much of an argument for anything other than the Ibrox club being declared champions.”
