Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed how important Andy Halliday has been in the early stages of his spell at Ibrox, declaring him the ‘unofficial captain’ of the squad.

This time last year it looked like the midfielder’s career at the club may be over having been sent on loan to Azerbaijan by manager Pedro Caixinha. Now though, it’s unthinkable to consider him not being a key squad member for Gerrard.

The Rangers boss couldn’t speak more highly of him in the wake of last week’s result in Spain.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Gerrard said:

I love Andy Halliday. When I came in there was a list of players. Some had ticks, some had question marks and some had crosses.

It was important to see them close up, eye to eye, in a few sessions, to see if they had the ability or the level.

At the same time, you are looking at them off the pitch to see what type of characters they are. Andy has just been perfect since day one. It was a bit of a shock, really, from what I’d heard or read. His performances are getting stronger and stronger.

He’s almost like a captain in the dressing room. In fact, he is the unofficial captain of this club. He glues everything together. He helps the foreign lads a lot and he’s someone who cares about the club. You need these people about.

It’s pleasing to hear that Halliday has managed to turn around the perception of him as a failed played, something that is translating to fan opinion too. He’s been praised highly for his performances over the last couple of months and rightly so.

Rangers die hards will needed if we are to challenge for the major honours in Scotland this season and it appears that Gerrard not only recognises that, but is also bringing Halliday’s game to new levels on the pitch.

Long may it continue.
