Every transfer window Rangers are linked with Liverpool players, as long as Steven Gerrard is at the club, it is something we will just have to get used to.

It is interesting though that since Ross Wilson arrived we haven’t signed any promising youngsters on loan from Anfield instead, preferring to look further afield from the comfort blanket that was a group of players that the gaffer knew from his time coaching at Liverpool’s academy.

The Athletic has revealed that as many as seven of Jurgen Klopp’s fringe players could be part of a clear out this summer and there are a few names who could well do a job for Rangers – if they are given the chance.

Ben Woodburn, Adrian, Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Sheyi Ojo, Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi are said to be the players who will be allowed to leave and even at first glance there are three affordable players that would enhance Gerrard’s squad in positions where we will need upgrades in the summer.

First of all, let’s rule out Adrian (not needed), Grujic and Wilson ( both too expensive) and of course Ojo, the latter for obvious reasons.

To clarify, for Shaqiri and Origi to be within our price range we would probably have to be looking at them as guaranteed starters so that would mean the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent or Ianis Hagi departing, not something I want to see or recommend happening.

The other issue is that Liverpool do well when it comes to protecting their assets and even fringe players still have a few years left to run on their deals, we would be counting on calling a couple of favours in during transfer fee negotiations.

Woodburn is the player that most fits our transfer model and has been linked with us before, he is 21-years old, capable of playing in a few positions and has just a year left on his current contract having failed to hit the heights his early promise suggested he was capable of.

Loan spells at Oxford United, Sheffield United and Blackpool have disappointed but he still has 10 caps for Wales to his name, Origi would be my first choice but out of the seven players that are said to be available, Woodburn is the one we are most likely to see at Ibrox – unless Ross Wilson really has something up his sleeve.
