Rangers have had a quiet January transfer window other than for those making their way out of the club and the rumour mill remains strangely quiet but one such story surfaced at the weekend about the potential return for a former Ibrox star who – to put it mildly – split fan opinion.

Josh Windass with 4 goals in 16 games this season, according to The Scotsman, could be the subject of a potential bid from the Ibrox club as they look for attacking reinforcements with the Wigan forward capable of playing a number of positions in the Rangers line-up.

Windass left the Gers in 2018 for a fee believed to be around £3m and with his valuation reportedly less – £500k if recent stories are accurate –  it could represent a relatively safe option for Steven Gerrard as he tries to identify ways in which he can provide support to Jermain Defoe when he covering for Alfredo Morelos.

Ironically, Windass left Rangers just before they changed to a formation that would have suited his style of play, with two inside forwards rather than wingers, he would now get the chance to play in his preferred central area rather than being expected to supply crosses or support from out wide.

His time at Rangers wasn’t without controversy though, hushing the away fans after scoring a goal against Partick Thistle wasn’t the best way to enamour himself with the Light Blues’ support.

He left Ibrox with statistics of 18 goals and 8 assists in 41 appearances in his last season and might have been a useful option for Gerrard had he decided to stay at the club and fight for his place, he could yet return to provide the spark needed to get the Gers over the line as they look for their first league title since 2011.
