Rangers legend believes Helicopter Sunday spirit can inspire Gerrard’s team to title

|

Former captain Barry Ferguson believes Steven Gerrard’s Rangers should adopt the attitude of the club’s famous title win in 2005, forgetting about Celtic completely to focus on mounting their trophy challenge.

Given the drama that is occurring on the other side of the city, the Gers could easily take their eyes off the prize here and be distracted by the Celtic Park implosion.

Ferguson though has pleaded with the team to quietly go about their business and believe they can still get the job done this season.

Writing in his regular Daily Record column, the Ibrox icon explained:

None of it matters at all to Gerrard and his players. All they have to focus on form here on in is being as professional as they can be, keep pushing those standards and winning as many games as possible.

Look, let’s not beat around the bush here. Can Rangers win the title this season? It’s going to be a massive ask, especially if Celtic keep turning one point into three points with the last kick of the ball. You’ve got to take your hat off to them for that because it shows that they have the desire and huger to keep on striving for more.

And that’s precisely what Gerrard is demanding from his players.

So forget about what Celtic are doing and keep on plugging away because I’m the living proof that you never know what is just around the corner. I can still hear the swirling noise of the rotor blades ringing in my ears right now.

Ferguson is of course referring to the infamous ‘Helicopter Sunday’, the day when Rangers won the Scottish Premier League title against all odds, leaving Martin O’Neill’s Celtic grieving at Fir Park.

That was always unlikely too, but the team got on with their job week by week, casting aside anything outside what happens on the pitch.

If Gerrard’s side can summon that spirit and haul in an eight points gap they will go down in history as one of the fans’ favourite ever sides.

Are we in line for a blockbuster end to the season?
