Gerrard says Rangers stars should relish playing with one man in particular – it’s not Morelos

Steven Gerrard believes striker Jermain Defoe is a dream for Rangers midfielders, recalling the days he used to play alongside the striker.

Gerrard was a teammate of the veteran forward on numerous occasions for the England national team and knows exactly what kind of service he thrives off of.

With the on-loan Bournemouth man on target again on Wednesday night, the Gers boss believes the striker is just getting started.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Gerrard said:

That is what we’ve brought him here for, to score goals.

It doesn’t matter whether Jermain plays 90 minutes or 60 or 30, we want him to be a goal threat, and his movement is fantastic.

I used to love playing with him. He’s a dream for a midfielder because his movement tells you where to play the ball.

It was a great pass from Ryan and a great finish, and he’ll continue to do that if we provide the service for him.

Defoe has now scored five goals in eight appearances and is certainly doing the job asked of him when he joined on his 18-month loan in January.

Whether a starting mainstay or a super sub, it’s clear he will play a massive part in Gerrard’s Rangers story and that’s why he’s paid the big money. He is a difference maker.

There will come a time when his goals become absolutely crucial and hopefully our midfielders can begin to find him with more regularity and the service becomes more consistent.
