The issue of which Rangers players will be signing new contracts before the end of this season is one that will hover over the club until the summer and, for all that Ross Wilson might be relaxed about it, it’s safe to say that the fans aren’t.

Of course, it’s not just as easy as either making a player sign a new deal or selling them, there have to be offers to consider and they have to be at a price that we value them at to make it worth our while. Every club has players who walk away for nothing, unfortunately, we are no different.

What we do need to do is make sure that our best young talents are protected because losing them for nothing really is a kick in the stomach, especially if they are regularly featuring in the first-team like Nathan Patterson did before his then-record sale to Everton.

Following in his footsteps has been Leon King and, if transfer supremo Fabrizio Romano – as we are legally obliged to call him – has his facts right, then it looks as though the teenage defender is set to be here for the next few years.

King’s promotion has been accelerated due to injuries and we had to accept that he was going to be making his mistakes in the first-team rather than out on loan or in the B team. A player of his potential has to be given the encouragement that he will be trusted, it also acts as motivation for the likes of Alex Lowry – if you are good enough, you’ll keep your place.

There have been some games where he has strolled it and others where he has struggled but his age and inexperience have to be considered, there is a reason some of the top clubs in England have been trying to get him for the last few years, thankfully, if they want him now, they’ll have to pay a fee that reflects his sizeable potential.
