Rangers have been linked with a return for former academy kid Kenny McLean with the Norwich City midfielder said to be the subject of a bid in January from the Light Blues.

The Scottish Sun reports that the player, who was part of the Scotland team that qualified for the European Championships next summer, could be targeted either on an immediate and permanent deal or as a loan-to buy offer.

McLean was on the books at Auchenhowie between 2006 and 2008 but made his name in the same midfield as Ryan Jack at Aberdeen, there had been talk of the former St Mirren midfielder joining his Dons team-mate at Ibrox but he chose to move down south instead, helping the Canaries earn promotion to the Premier League in the process.

Ross Wilson recently gave an interview through a question and answer session with fans and gave a brief insight into how transfers are approached, gone are the random signings to be replaced with a more targeted approach.

McLean – valued at just under £3million by Transfermarkt –  is an established international and whereas he might not be a world beater, the volume of games that Rangers play require the midfield to have strength in numbers and he would certainly be able to contribute to that – he has shown that he can hold his own in the Premier League and English Championship to back up his SPFL experience.

Which Rangers player has the most international caps?

The next window opens in just six-weeks time and despite having a group of midfielders all in form and operating at the highest level, Wilson and Steven Gerrard are obviously looking to the future, with Steven Davis’s contract expiring in the summer, Bongani Zungu only being on loan and Scott Arfield having just a year left to run on his deal – it is reassuring to see that preparations are already underway to prevent last minute panic buys, another sign that things have changed for the good in Govan.
