Jordan Jones is heading out of Ibrox after it was reported by The Scotsman that the Northern Ireland international has signed for Sunderland for the remainder of the season.

The 26-year old has never been far from the headlines in his 18-months at Rangers and yet, usually, it has been for all the wrong reasons.

A self-confessed bluenose, Jones – who has nine caps for his country – sealed his dream move in 2019 after impressing for Kilmarnock and was seen as an upgrade on Daniel Candeais, his first impression was coming on as a substitute in the opening game of the season against his former club and changing the game with his direct running and attacking intent.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of his Rangers career was his performance in the Europa League qualifiers when he produced one of the finest seen by a Light Blues player against Midtjylland, with hindsight it is now a huge source of frustration because it gave us a glimpse of what he was capable of.

A stupid red card against Celtic that saw him spend four months on the sideline was followed up with off field misdemeanours and, after fighting his way back into Steven Gerrard’s plans with positive displays against Willem II and Motherwell, he all but sealed his fate by breaking Covid-19 protocols along with George Edmundson, earning a seven match ban in the process.

He got the chance that we all dreamt of as kids and blew it and for that reason alone there will be little sympathy when he leaves.
