After a horror show at Parkhead, Jon McLaughlin was under even more scrutiny than normal when he took to the pitch against Ajax on Wednesday night.

Not many goalkeepers have experienced losing eight goals in two games in their Rangers careers, the early 80s and 1920s for those that want to know, and yet, alongside Borna Barisic and Leon King, he could, at least, walk off the pitch knowing that he had begun to redeem himself for his derby display.

None of the goals was his fault and he made a series of decent stops with both his hands and his feet keeping the score from reaching even more embarrassing levels, he also commanded his box well and, after his defenders failed to do their jobs at the first goal, took matters into his own hands and came for a few corners and free-kicks to relieve pressure and panic.

It’s a discussion that will continue throughout the season, however, I think that McLaughlin has shown that he can be trusted to make the position his own. If we dropped players after one bad derby display there are several Gers legends that would never have made it at the club.

McLaughlin carried the can for the defeat at Parkhead but there are so many more issues for concern just now as our defeat to Ajax proved, a change of goalkeeper isn’t the priority when players aren’t working hard enough and have barely created a chance in 180 minutes of football.
