John Lundstram‘s start to life in a Light Blue shirt didn’t quite go according to plan as he saw his new side lose 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers, Steven Gerrard reminding a few in his post match interview that there is no such thing as friendlies.

The 27-year old is a huge coup especially when you consider that Rangers fought off competition from sides in the Premier League and former Ger, Alan Hutton, feels that he will add more than just quality to the midfield, as reported by Football Insider:

“I think he can be that number eight, that box-to-box midfielder.

“He’s very physical, he’s a big presence in there. You need that in the Scottish game, he can definitely handle himself.

“If you look at his goals and assists, it might not be where you want it to be for a midfielder getting into the box. You want him to contribute at the end of the pitch. That’s something he can improve on and learn about from Steven Gerrard, those late runs and shots on goal. I expect improvement in that area.

“But he’s not there just to be back up. He’s there to enhance the squad, he’s there to push them on and make them better.

“As a player, a midfielder, if you see that standard of player come in it’s going to make you better. Simple as that.

“They’re not standing still, they’re trying to push forward and this is the intent of Rangers.”

Hutton is right, we’ve seen technically gifted players struggle in Scotland because of the physicality required to be a success but Lundstram is equally adept in both aspects of the game.

Will Lundstram be a success at Rangers?

With Gerrard and Gary McAllister guiding him, there is no reason why he can’t go on and become even better – becoming a key player for Rangers for many years to come in the process.
