When Rangers brought in a director of football or sporting director, one of the main purposes was to provide the club with continuity so that we didn’t have a scenario where every time we changed manager a squad was being ripped up and rebuilt to suit their needs.

Now, we hire a manager that suits the squad we have and, as seen with Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the early signs are that it could be a successful plan.

What this means is that when we are scouting and recruiting for new players, there shouldn’t be much difference whoever is in charge and one player who, if anything, is even better suited to GvB’s system is Millwall’s Jed Wallace – a player that we were linked with under Steven Gerrard.

With Rangers now looking for extra width from their wingers, Wallace would be a perfect option for the right-hand side of attack and with five goals and six assists in 21 appearances, he is capable of producing the sort of numbers our support demands, the 27-year old is also out of contract at the end of the season but suffered a blow at the weekend, as revealed by the Lions manager Gary Rowett:

“We’ve got a few knocks, the usual after a game.

“Jed has got a tight quad  and that will be scanned, as to whether that is an injury or just soreness after the match. Sav [George Saville] has been struggling with a back injury and is going to be assessed through the week.”

Hopefully it is nothing serious and that he is back in action soon, Wallace – valued at £6million – is one of a few previous targets who could still be considered when the transfer window opens in a couple of weeks time, as long as Gio gives Ross Wilson the nod that is.
