That was the one we’ve been waiting for.

Finally, James Tavernier produced a performance that matched his numbers.

The last few games has seen him try to drag his team back up to the levels of last season but against Motherwell he did more than that – he was relentless.

As Patrick Caskie suggested on Twitter, Tavernier does suffer from his own success and ridiculously high standards and yet, his numbers are still better than most wingers – never mind right-backs.

With three goals and nine assists in 17 appearances, his goal contribution rate is incredible but he has been going through a sticky patch, not as consistent in possession with the odd mistake thrown in has seen pressure increase on the skipper – the goal conceded against Motherwell the latest in a line of ones that could have been defended better.

But, as he has done throughout his time at the club, when you contribute to 12 goals in 17 games, being at fault for one or two goals a season is forgivable – well, it should be anyway.

Hopefully the performance on Sunday – rated at 9.6 out of 10 – is the start of something special for both the captain and the team as a whole, Tavernier will be looking over his shoulder knowing that Nathan Patterson is kicking his heels on the bench, however, the youngster has the perfect role model and player to look up to – be patient, he’ll get his chance, we should be in no rush to chase one of the best right-backs in our history out the door.
