There remains no official confirmation one way or the other that Jack Wilshere is a genuine transfer target for Rangers, however, what seemed like a pipe dream appears to be a distinct possibility.
Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips has revealed just how close a move to Scotland could be for the former West Ham United midfielder.
When asked to comment on the recent speculation linking Steven Gerrard with his old England colleague, he said:
“I understand Wilshere is deep into negotiations with Rangers.
“I think that move would suit him down to the ground. I think it would be a breeze in that league for him.
“I am big fan of Jack Wilshere. When he is fit and is travelling with the ball, there are not many better. A tremendous left foot and he can ghost past people.
“If he can stay fit, he would dominate in that league. It would definitely be a fantastic signing for Rangers.”
There have been claims that both sides are flirting with each other and would be open to a move, but as yet, no formal or official offer has been made.
It wouldn’t have taken much for the Gers gaffer to pick up the phone to a player he once crossed swords with on the pitch and it would be of little surprise if he hasn’t at least sounded him out about the possibility of a move, that the player refused to rule out a move to the Scottish Premiership tells a story in itself.
Every pundit that has spoken about the rumour has said the same thing, how good he would be for Rangers – if they can keep him fit – but, given his quality, it would be a risk worth taking and one that would once again bring Scottish football back under the spotlight.
