Former England striker, Darren Bent, claims that Rangers have pulled of a stunning piece of transfer business after reportedly securing Charlie Lindsay’s signature.
Speaking to Football Insider, Bent is excited by the transfer but knows what is really needed at the Ibrox club.
So what has Bent said?
When asked to reflect on the news that Rangers had sealed the deal, with the 15-year old set to sign when he turns 16 in July, Bent said:
“It [the Lindsay deal] is brilliant.
“He’s been coveted as one of the top youngsters around the country. What a coup that is for Rangers.
“He’ll be good for Rangers if he’s got that potential.
“But every season it’s about them finishing above Celtic. They need players that are going to in right now.
“They can’t really wait for another two or three years and let Celtic win another two or three titles. He [Gerrard] needs players who can make a real difference.”
So is Bent correct?
It is a fantastic signing for the club, Lindsay has impressed when turning out for the Gers academy side and has already played for Glentoran’s first-team but Bent is correct, Steven Gerrard will also be looking to sign players who immediately improve his starting XI.
The Ibrox gaffer knows that his side isn’t far away from their city rivals, however, beating them on one-off games isn’t enough to win a league title and put a halt to Celtic’s dominance.
With the SPFL resolution finally being approved after Dundee’s incredible U-turn, all eyes will be on UEFA next week and whether or not the top flight will follow suit and call a halt to the Scottish Premiership.
Gerrard won’t concern himself with the potential legal action that will involve his club but he will be looking ahead to mounting a sustained challenge once the proper action returns and to do that he will need to find more gems like Lindsay, only ones that are ready to make an instant impact.
