Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes Allan McGregor is a better option than Celtic shot-stopper Craig Gordon right now.

McGregor, who returned to the Gers on a free transfer at the end of last season, has been perhaps the most impressive signings out of the many that Steven Gerrard has made since becoming boss at Ibrox.

He’s made some incredible saves both in domestic football and in European action, where he helped the club reach the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.

Ferguson believes it’s one position that the Ibrox side are stronger than Celtic in.

Speaking to The Daily Record ahead of Scotland’s match away to Albania, the Rangers icon said:

In goals it has to be Allan McGregor. His glove rival Craig Gordon has done nothing wrong, he’s a top keeper, but Allan is on a different planet.

When he rejoined Rangers I said he’d be their best signing because he’s worth 12-15 points a season. He is Rangers’ most influential player by far, an exceptional keeper and a born winner.

Ultimately Alex McLeish did opt to go for McGregor, who helped the Tartan Army keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 win, although the home side offered little attacking threat.

At 36 years of age, McGregor may be in the twilight of his career but I reckon he has two or three good seasons left in him if he can stay injury free.

He’s going to be absolutely crucial to our hopes of winning major honours over the next couple of years.
