Ibrox has been bursting at the seams for a few years now, fans showing unwavering support for their club to get them back on top and stadium expansion has never been far from a topic of conversation.

With 44,000 season tickets sold the club is almost costing itself money by restricted the amount of match day revenue it can generate however, including the waiting list, it is a sign that there simply isn’t enough room to fit demand.

Vice chairman John Bennett recently confirmed on the Louden Podcast that the investigation process is ongoing into how more seats could be added with football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, suggesting that he sees no reason why 60,000 shouldn’t be feasible, as told to Football Insider:

“With the Steven Gerrard factor and the fact they are competing in Europe, why can’t they be looking at something around 60,000?

“There are three clubs in London that have that capacity, so why can we not have two in Glasgow?

“Both Rangers and Celtic have fanbases that go beyond the borders of Glasgow itself. People are hugely invested in both clubs in the city but also all around Scotland as well.

“There are about 600,000 people in Glasgow but that doesn’t stop Liverpool and Everton both getting huge crowds. The same goes for both Manchester clubs.”

Most Rangers fans will be able to tell you the issue with expansion plans; proximity to the Clyde river which would restrict the ability to lower the pitch, and the way in which the corners were filled in during David Murray’s tenure to accommodate large screens.

Who finished as Rangers top goal scorer this season?

Safe standing remains an option and there will be ways around squeezing every last possible seat out of Ibrox but 60,000 just isn’t feasible, for now, however, if you put a couple of ladders up, I’m pretty sure fans would happily sit on top of the stands to make the numbers up – given the chance!
