I almost feel sorry for Steven Gerrard.

How can you fix something that isn’t your fault?

No amount of training or preparation could prevent Connor Goldson from playing a hospital pass to John Lundstram, James Tavernier leaving his man at a corner, Steven Davis not controlling a long ball under no pressure or Allan McGregor failing to make decent contact with a corner.

There is, of course, more to each goal that we have lost recently but, when you look at some of the individuals involved, they form the leadership group of the team that is supposed to set the standards for others to follow.

It isn’t a systemic problem – remember losing goals at the back post from crosses, or earlier this season, balls over the top of the defence? We are making too many individual mistakes that are being punished.

At the start of the season we weren’t creating enough chances to win games but in the last five in the league – three of which we’ve dropped points in at home – we should have been out of sight and well in control.

Giving teams a head start affects the whole team and the whole performance, it also allows the opposition to do what Scottish teams love doing the most, sitting in and protecting the six-yard box – how many shots did Rangers have that were goal bound only to see them blocked purely because Aberdeen could afford to have all their players behind the ball?

The skipper spoke after the game at Ibrox and suggested that the players have spoken about what needs to be done, hopefully, it clicks and that the message has sunk in – before it’s too late.
