Young Rangers winger Glenn Middleton is hoping to use the recent international break as a confidence booster that propels him back into Steven Gerrard’s first-team plans, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Middleton may have made 28 appearances this season for the senior side, but only seven of those matches have been starts, the last of which came way back in December.

His only appearances in 2019 have been substitute cameos against St Johnstone and Cowdenbeath.

Gerrard appears to have lost a bit of faith in the youngster despite a bright first half of the season and it’s something the player is looking to address after shining on youth international duty last week.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the 19-year-old said:

I am trying to get back to my best — to what I was like at the start of the season.

Hopefully, I found a bit of form out here and got back into my rhythm about how I do things. I’ve played a lot of game time with Rangers — almost 30 games this season so far and I have been very grateful for the opportunities I have been given.

I like to push myself as much as I can so I’ll go back to Rangers and show what I am capable of.

Everyone is competing for places at Rangers, I know that — that’s what they are always trying to do and that’s why Rangers have the quality that they have just now as well as the new signings that are coming in the summer.

Middleton’s form was inconsistent but that’s to be expected of a teenager. The glimpses of quality he did show have given fans hope he can be a real player in the future.

Scoring goals against Dundee, Ayr United, Spartak Moscow and Motherwell have shown he can find his way to goal.

With Ryan Kent unlikely to be at the club next season, Daniel Candeias ageing and potentially not much to play for at the end of the season shortly, is it time to reintroduce the winger to the first-team and invest more into his future?

  • Glen Middleton has been an outstanding young player in his short spells coming on for rangers he is a talented player who can make chances with his intelligent moves down the wing but he needs a bit more encouragement from his coach….one to watch.
