Pre-contract duo Gers should target to replace Jack

Ryan Jack’s latest injury blow  will have a sizeable impact on the Rangers squad, not only is he a regular partner for John Lundstram in big games where the defence needs extra protection but he is a home grown player who helps to contribute towards the UEFA squad quota.

With the 30-year old’s contract expiring at the end of the season, he would have to have had an almost injury free season to warrant an extension, however, you could tell by the way he walked off the park against Liverpool that he knew he wasn’t going to be back any time soon – Giovanni van Bronckhorst confirming that it is months rather than weeks.

It’s a problem that can be addressed in January either by looking at previous targets like Darius Olaru or by considering money saving offers for players who will be available on pre-contract agreements.

Two players who immediately stick out as first-team ready options are John Fleck and Kenny McLean. Are they world beaters? No. But neither is Jack. Both would, however, represent cost effective replacements to add depth to our midfield without blocking the likes of Charlie McCann and Alex Lowry.

McLean is more of natural number eight with Fleck better at building play, both are naturally left footed and would add balance to a midfield that has started to creak this season.

Fleck, of course, would count as an academy player and McLean as an association player, again, further improving our squad for UEFA competitions.

With Steven Davis not getting any younger and Jack looking unlikely to stay fit for a season, picking up the two Scotland internationals on reduced fees or pre-contract deals would free up cash for the likes of Evander or Olaru who would instantly improve the starting XI – with plenty of Premier League experience between them, McLean and Fleck represent safe options for domestic football at  time when there is no margin for error in the transfer market.
