Rangers face battle for in-demand striker as Gerrard looks to add goals to squad

|

Rangers hunt for further firepower continues with news that one-time target, Lyle Taylor, now has as many as 10 teams chasing his signature, according to The Daily Record.

Taylor has long been said by the media to be a target of Steven Gerrard, and with the striker’s contract at Charlton Athletic now expired he is available to sign immediately for any club wanting to secure his services.

His manager at the Addicks had announced Taylor’s decision not to extend his contract to play the final games of the 2019/20 season and revealed that he had been presented with an offer that was too good to turn down:

“It’s difficult because he’s got a chance of earning life-changing money. It’s not like he’s a young lad and has many years in front of him.

“I can half understand because he may not get this opportunity again.”

Gerrard is in a difficult position in trying to add another striker to his ranks knowing that many will see Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe as the two first-choice players in his squad – this leaves the Gers gaffer looking at Bosman deals where higher wagers make the move more attractive or younger targets such as Rhian Brewster who may be available for loan.

The alternate option is spending decent money accepting that Morelos and Defoe won’t be around forever which would give any new arrivals time to settle in before being put under any real pressure to perform – the likes of Ivan Toney spring to mind in this bracket.

Either way, with the rumour mill surprisingly quiet, Gers fans will be expecting new faces sooner rather than later with the domestic season starting in just a couple of weeks time in what has the potential to be one of the biggest in the club’s history.
