Rangers have been linked with a replacement for Nikola Katic after the Croatian international suffered a knee injury in training that will see him miss most of the 2020/21 season.

Football Insider – who beat the main stream Scottish media in the announcements of Jon McLaughlin and Calvin Bassey – claim that former Tottenham Hotspur centre-half, Christian Maghoma, is the latest player to be linked with a move to Ibrox.

The 22-year old is available on a free contract after leaving Arka Gdynia in Poland, the player’s two year stint coming to an end having signed on his departure from Spurs in 2018.

Interestingly, the towering defender is compared to Hibernian’s Ryan Porteous on Transfermarkt as being a similar type of player to give a basic understanding of the DR Congo international’s style of play – if, of course, the assessment is correct.

Where does Rangers "target" Lyndon Dykes current play his football?

There has been speculation as to whether or not Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson would go into the market for extra depth in defence with Lewis Mayo, Ross McCrorie and new recruit Calvin Bassey all capable of deputising if required but it looks as though they have gone for a low risk option in the shape of Maghoma.

With no initial outlay and a salary that is unlikely to break the bank, added to the 6ft 4inch defender having a decent pedigree with over 50 appearances for Spurs reserve team, if he was to do well at Rangers there is every chance that a sizeable profit could be made in the future.

At a time when no risk transfers are few and far between, this one has the potential to be as close as possible, with cover provided in a key area at minimal cost at a level of experience that isn’t going to cause friction within the squad as Gerrard prepares his side for the huge challenge that the upcoming season presents.
