There appears to be a two-horse race for the vacant manager’s job at Rangers, former first-team coach Michael Beale and Sean Dyche. Other names have been mentioned but none of them appear to be genuine contenders and seem to be ruled out as quickly as they are reported.

Most of the media went in early with Beale, however, if it was a done deal, why has there been a week since Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sacked without an appointment being made?

One reason for this could well be the strength of Dyche’s interview with Football Insider claiming that he has impressed during talks with Rangers representatives:

“Sean Dyche is being seen by Rangers as an increasingly strong alternative to Michael Beale after holding talks with the club, sources have told Football Insider.

“Dyche is believed to have had discussions with Rangers as they continue to take to candidates about replacing the sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

“He is said to be “well up for it” and “fancies” a crack at managing a giant club who regularly compete in elite European competition.”

Dyche’s Burley team for being effective and well prepared but they produced an entirely different type of football to the one that is needed at Ibrox. There also needs to be tactical flexibility between domestic and European football.

The former centre-half certainly has the personality and character for the job but he just doesn’t have the CV that you would expect the next Rangers manager to have, there are too many unanswered questions and doubts about style and philosophy, regardless of how much he “fancies” the job.
