Rangers fans couldn’t all agree on who the right person to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst was, however, what they could agree on is that the current squad needs some serious investment.

Michael Beale is the man tasked with rejuvenating a squad that is largely made up with players who have a league and cup winners medal in their back pocket as well as Europa League final appearance. The rebuild isn’t quite as big as some might have you believe.

As part of the club’s statement when Beale was announced, chairman Douglas Park hinted that the new manager might be getting the required level of support needed to challenge on all fronts:

“I am delighted to welcome Michael as our new manager as we aim to strengthen our on-field performance.

“Michael is a very exciting appointment for us, and his energy and ambition stood out both when he was here previously, and in the discussions we have had prior to him re-joining.

“The board will support both Michael and Ross Wilson to make this appointment a success, and I wish him the very best going forward.”

It seems strange to throw Ross Wilson’s name into the statement when announcing the managerial appointment unless there is a specific reason, Park has to be suggesting that the sporting director and manager will be supported in the most basic of forms – in the transfer market.

There is, after all, no point in bringing in an exciting manager and then making him pick from Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis in midfield. All reliable midfielders but limited in terms of how flexible they can be in terms of game plans.

Beale has talked the talk, as has Park, now it’s time for them both to walk the walk.
