Two months have passed since Kris Boyd stated that Rangers would be “absolutely crazy” to offer Alfredo Morelos a new contract.

Much has changed since in terms of the situation at the club with Michael Beale steering the team to calmer waters with a positive outlook ahead, yet in terms of contracts, there are still questions on the futures of many players, particularly Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent.

In early December, Boyd opined that securing Kent on new terms would be of benefit to the club and given how Beale has unlocked a new level from the English attacker, that aim is even more obvious. However, a more delicate, precarious situation surrounds the Colombian international.

He is needed in the here and now, given the prominence that he still retains as Rangers star striker, the main man up front. That is heightened with uncertaintly for one reason or another, over Antonio Colak and Kemar Roofe. Recent weeks have also brought about a better vein of form for Morelos with six goals and three assists since the league restart.

His return and impact has improved alongside his match fitness, after Beale stated that his striker was playing with an injury.

In December, Boyd was quoted in his Sun column with the following:

“The people in charge at Rangers would be stark raving mad to hand Morelos a new contract. The player terrorising defenders a few years ago just doesn’t exist any more. He’s gone. History.”

“I’ve just had enough of Morelos for the way he’s trying to pull the wool over everyone’e eyes. I used to love the moody way he went up against centre-backs and couldn’t care less what anyone thought about him. Now he’s moody because he’s struggling with his own game.”

The former Ibrox striker maintained his position last week despite the upturn with Morelos but the truth is probably somewhere in between.

‘El Bufalo’ is currently contributing and playing his part but for the package it would take for a new contract as well as what the return would be over two to three years, it is probable that the money could be better spent elsewhere. It is thought that a contract offer is on the table as much as there is no sign of an agreement being close.

Even if the end is near, there is still plenty of scope and silverware on the line for the club’s record European goalscorer to leave a final legacy at Ibrox.
