Rangers hero Steven Davis is as grounded as ever given his knee injury issue but the veteran has revealed his fear of what the outcome could be.

With strong aspirations of taking to the pitch once again for club and country, the Northern Ireland legend has stated that he doesn’t want “this to be the defining moment that ends my playing career.”

In a glittering career that has saw Davis lift four Scottish titles as well as three Scottish Cups and three League Cups, he has also graced the Champions League for the club as well as two European finals in the UEFA Cup, as well as its more recent guise as the Europa League. Beyond that, Davis starred in the Premier League for Southampton years after making his breakthrough with Aston Villa and Fulham in England’s top-flight.

The proud Ulsterman retains great significance in leading his country to Euro 2016 in France, another career highlight.

Ambition

Now, 38, Davis knows that time is not on his side. Having recently undergone surgery for his knee problem, now it is a long and arduous road ahead if he is to recover to the extent that he can continue his career. Given his qualities, experience and ability, the man himself will know if he has what it takes upon completion of his rehab, to play on.

He told BBC Northern Ireland Sport:

“I’ve got to be realistic – it’s a big injury and takes a lot of time to come back from.”

“At my age and the stage I’m at in my career I know it’s going to be difficult but I’ve always been a very fit person so that should stand me in good stead and give me the best possible chance.”

“I haven’t made any decisions about moving forward, I’ll just concentrate on ‘rehabbing’ to the best of my ability and stay focused.”

Michael Beale recently lamented losing the services of his vastly experienced midfielder as well as the impact on the player, personally. He effectively left the door open for Davis, without pressure, in what will be an interesting situation with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Steven Davis will take it all in his stride, as ever, regardless of what lies ahead but hopefully the final chapter of his career is still to be written.
