Former Rangers right-back, Alan Hutton, believes that Steven Gerrard faces a transfer dilemma this summer with speculation surrounding one of his defensive mainstays.

Connor Goldson has been linked with a return to England and Hutton – speaking to Football Insider -feels that the time is right to either offer him a new deal or cash in – if the price is right.

So what has Hutton said?

When asked to comment on the rumours linking a host of Premier League and Championship sides with a move for the £6million rated centre-half, he said:

“It’s going to be difficult if some of the bigger teams come calling but I think maybe it’s time that Rangers look to offer him a new contract, maybe hold him down if you like.

“He’s 27 now, he’s obviously getting to the peak, he’ll probably be looking to tie himself down for the next few years so hopefully it is Rangers because he has done excellently well.

“However, I think if the price is right then maybe it’s one Rangers will look to cash in on.”

So is Hutton correct?

If Goldson wasn’t one of the first names on Gerrard’s team sheet every week he might have a point about Rangers potentially cashing in, however, in what is sure to be a monumental season he will want to keep the core of his team together.

True or false, Graeme Souness's first signing as Rangers manager was Terry Butcher?

He is right about the club potentially offering a new contract though, he still has two years left to run on his initial deal but after playing over 100 games in less than two seasons he has shown a resilience that is an often forgotten quality.

Because of the lack of recent success fans are quick to criticise any mistake and Goldson’s error against Hamilton shortly before the season was called to a halt put him severely under the spotlight, however, he has enough credit in the bank from imperious displays in the Europa League and Old Firm fixtures to merit his status as a key player in Gerrard’s attempts to usurp Celtic atop the Scottish Premiership.
