Richard Gough knows what a decent centre-half looks like having not only been one himself but having played with more than a few throughout his long and illustrious career, and when he said that it could cost £8million to replace Connor Goldson then you’d be inclined to agree with him.

This is the decision facing our vice-captain, we all know the situation with his contract but Gough has reminded him that, if he leaves in the summer, he isn only going in one direction, as told to The Daily Record:

“Connor knows himself that he won’t play for a bigger club in Britain. He might get more money but he won’t play at a club where he has to win every game. It’s a constant pressure and there’s nothing like it.

“He’ll have seen that on Sunday. He’ll know that if he goes, he’s not going to play in the semi final of a European competition again.

“This is an experience of a lifetime for him.”

Gough is absolutely correct in that it would be a surprise to see a top Premier League team take a punt on Goldson, even if he is available on a free transfer, so some of the games he has experienced recently could well be his last with everything hingeing on what his immediate priorities are.

Wanting to move closer to home is understandable given that he has a young family, as is moving for more money, there have been reports in the past that he could double his money even if he moved to a lower half Premier League team such is the disparity of finances, however, the potential to win trophies, play in the Champions League and experience what he has last week will almost certainly come to an end if he packs his bags and heads down the M6.
