Colak or Morelos? There is room for both

It’s a debate that has been going on all season – who should be first choice Rangers striker, Antonio Colak or Alfredo Morelos?

Michael Beale has hinted at playing with both of them together, suggesting that they have the requisite skill mix to dovetail together but, as yet, we’ve not seen them for any sustained period of time.

What we do know, regardless of whether or not Morelos signs a new contract, is that the Gers gaffer is looking for a new striker in the summer, preferably one that can do both jobs.

Colak – statistically – is the more accurate striker. For example, at their current conversion rates, Morelos would have scored six goals this season with the Croatian international’s quality of chances instead of the 11 that Colak actually has. Conversely, Colak would, probably, have an extra couple of goals in his account had he been given the same level of service as the Colombian.

In Kemar Roofe we have a striker who can link play outside the box but also match this guile with an end product, unfortunately, we all know what his problem is and I doubt that his availability will improve any time soon. He is proof though that there are other options that can do both and a return to the sort of depth that Walter Smith enjoyed in his second spell should be our priority in the summer.

We play too many games to pick one striker for every game, they should have different skill sets and be picked depending on how the opposition will set up, sometimes – as we have seen this season – their selection might be dictated by injuries but there are enough opportunities for all of them, it shouldn’t be one or the other.
