Barisic in title warning with Old Firm victory no cause for celebration

|

Football is full of clichés and most of them are pretty accurate with Borna Barisic dropping a couple into a recent interview with the media in his homeland as the Croatian international reacted to the vital win over Celtic last weekend.

Speaking to Sportske Novosti and reported by The Daily Record, Barisic said of Rangers hopes of winning the title:

“We won three important points, but we are not talking about winning the title. We don’t have that way of thinking, we just concentrate on the next game and try to win it.

“We go from game to game and that’s our method of trying to win the championship. I can’t say anything else, because that’s really the truth.

“After the game, there was no celebration, no talk about the title, there was nothing. The only thing we discussed was out next match.

“The fans have been waiting for a decade and will be the happiest in the world if we win the title. However, that’s the angle from the fans and it’s not them who are playing, it’s us. It’s the players who must do it and therefore we must not lose our focus. Concentrate on the next game, nothing else matters.”

He’s hardly going to say “that’s it, job done, the title is ours” but it’s always reassuring when you hear a player talking about being focussed, when you look at some of the claims from across the city it is almost a mirror image of us from the last couple of seasons when the talk was always about a title challenge or closing the gap.

What has been biggest reason for gap at the top?

With Aberdeen and Hibernian – both away from home – on the horizon, a tough run of fixtures gets even tougher and if we can emerge on the other side of January with our record in tact, the fans, if not the players, might allow themselves to start getting carried away, without wanting to count any chickens…
