A report in The Scotsman claims that Rangers deal to sign Bongani Zungu is very much still on the cards with talks ongoing between the two clubs.

The transfer had looked to be all but completed at one stage with the 27-year old South African international even posting a photo of himself at Manchester airport, rumours then began to surface that he had failed a medical, however, it has subsequently emerged that the sticking point all along has been the fee.

Zungu is in the last year of his contract with Amiens but this hasn’t stopped the French side from looking for a sum in the region of €4million which will only depreciate with the window about to close in a week’s time – in January the midfielder will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement and the Ligue 2 club will get nothing.

Is Zungu the missing piece of the jigsaw?

No

Rangers do face competition for his services though and the report claims that Olympiacos as well as clubs in Spain are also interested in Zungu, what looked like a relatively straight forward transfer at one point has now turned into a game of chess.

Steven Gerrard has been hoping to add another body to the engine room almost since the window opened but as yet has been unable to tie anyone down, it would appear that Ross Wilson has done the hard work in agreeing personal terms with players and is now playing the waiting game to save as much on the transfer fee as possible – as long as he doesn’t leave it too late and miss out altogether, I’m not sure Rangers Twitter could take it.
