Rangers season could go one of two ways this year, it’s either going to be one of the most memorable in modern history or it could end up being a trophy less, damp squib, that promised a lot, but delivered little.

After making it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, talk amongst fans has turned to what might be, and what they would prefer to win if they had the choice; the Scottish Premiership or, a first European title since 1972?

For a lot of fans, winning the league is purely about the glory but, nowadays, the money that automatically qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League brings makes it an even bigger priority, however, when winning the Europa League provides the same pathway, surely this – given how rarely it happens – would be what most fans would desire?

Well, not according to Barry Ferguson, who, speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, via Football Scotland said:

“I’m saying I would rather win the league. I am the league, 100%, it would be great to win the Europa League but you have got to win the league title.”

We have a great chance of winning the league every season but there is a reason why we have only won one European trophy in 150 years, it is ridiculously hard to do. When you consider the clubs that are usually left at the sharp end of the competition and the finances available to them, it would make it even more incredible.

What would you rather win?

The run to the UEFA Cup final in 2008 is remembered fondly despite the result and our 1972 Cup Winners Cup success is accepted as the greatest night in our history, Ferguson seems willing to turn his nose up at something that would surpass anything that has gone before in our 150 years.

Winning the league title is, and always will be, the bread and butter but European trophies are a pretty special icing on top of the cake.
