Steven Gerrard is one of the front runners for the vacant Aston Villa manager’s job despite previously looking to calm speculation that he could be set for a return to the Premier League.

One of the biggest reasons for the link is his relationship with Christian Purslow who was Liverpool’s CEO towards the end of the former Anfield skipper’s playing career.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, former England midfielder, Carlton Palmer, believes that this could be enough to see him head south:

“Steven Gerrard has got legs, from what I’ve heard. He knows the owners, so that’s definitely got legs.”

Gerrard has praised Purslow’s work in the past, however, this – surely – isn’t enough to tempt him to leave a club sitting top of the table, in the middle of a European campaign and with work still to be done.

His loyalty is one of his best qualities.

The gaffer will, as long as he is at Rangers, be linked with every vacant manager’s job that comes up in England, even if he wasn’t doing that good a job you suspect that this would be the case, you just need to look at Frank Lampard and how, even with a record that is no more than adequate, he continues to have his name mentioned in a similar fashion.

Will Gerrard go to Aston Villa?

Yes

No

No

The odds might suggest that Gerrard is one of the favourites to replace Smith, however, he was also the favourite to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle United – CEOs can look and admire all they want, but he’s going nowhere, for now.
