Less than three weeks ago, Steven Gerrard was asked about speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.

At that point, the ‘proposed’ destination was Newcastle United, but with that door now shut, another has opened at Aston Villa.

The claims and quotes have now continued, after all it is just one price of success, but let’s go back to that BT Sport interview with the Rangers manager after the 2-0 home Europa League victory over Brondby.

“Do I look happy? Do I look settled? Don’t ask me silly questions then”

Emphatic and to the point.

So what can have changed within a matter of around three weeks and what can Aston Villa offer, that wasn’t up for grabs on Tyneside? That is a very difficult one.

The Birmingham club are currently sitting in 16th place in the Premier League table with 10 points gained from 11 played, they are too close for comfort to a relegation battle and hence why Dean Smith is no longer in situ at Villa Park.

Gerrard knows he has unfinished business at Ibrox, he desperately wants domestic silverware this season and to go on to retain the title. With that, most likely comes a significant budget in relative terms and a crack at the big boys in the Champions League.

Yes, nothing is guaranteed in football and the Premier League holds massive sway but it just seems apparent that for several reasons, now is not the time for Gerrard to bid farewell to Ibrox – he will leave eventually but all the public soundings from the Scottish Premiership winner indicates that he will be around at the helm at Ibrox for the forseeable future.
