There’s no way that when Allan McGregor first lined up between the sticks for Rangers that he wold have thought, 20 years later, that he would have a decision to make as to whether or not he was going to continue playing for another year.

It’s not clear what the terms will be, but it looks as though there are going to be talks with the 40-year old, who was given a rapturous reception when he came on as a late substitute for Jon McLaughlin at Hampden last weekend.

One man who knows him as well as anyone is Alan Hutton and, speaking to Football Insider, has suggested that his former team-mate and friend will take his time rather than being impulsive when asked whether or not the Scottish Cup was a fond farewell:

“I thought it was pure class from Rangers.

“Whether it is or it isn’t (a farewell), obviously he’s keeping his cards close to his chest. He’s going to go away on holiday and think about what he wants to do.

“I think there’s an opportunity for him to sign again at Rangers but it’s just up to him and how his body’s feeling.

“Overall, it was pure class to bring him on, just in case.”

I’d love to be a fly on the wall of Ross Wilson’s office this summer; player contract extensions, veterans being offered new terms, fielding offers for key stars and making bids for new ones, it’s going to be a busy few months for the sporting director, where McGregor sits in all this isn’t 100% clear.

McGregor was coy when Emma Dodds, working for Premier Sports on the day, pushed him on his future after what appeared to be such an obvious way of allowing the fans to appreciate him one more time, whether or not it is definitely the last time we’ll see him in a Rangers shirt, it looks like only he knows.
