Almost every Rangers fan could name the players who will be out of contract in the summer, it’s a list that makes for interesting reading in terms of the money that can potentially be saved off the wage bill but also the quality that we will need to find to replace them.
Michael Beale has already spoken about wanting to extend the deals of both Ryan Kent and Ryan Jack, however, he has been a bit more ambiguous in terms of where Alfredo Morelos’s future lies.
One week, the Gers gaffer was demanding more, the next he was saying that he was perfectly happy but what he was clear on was that all talks about a new contract for the Colombian international will now be shelved until the summer, not so, according to Fraser Fletcher, writing for Football Insider.
“Rangers will have fresh talks with striker Alfredo Morelos over the next week in an attempt to clarify his future, sources have told Football Insider.
“Morelos‘ contract expires in the summer and there is interest from France and Italy in the striker.
“The Gers are chasing a new forward ahead of the summer window but they are also aware they could lose their European top scorer for free at the end of the season.”
I genuinely think we can get better than Morelos, depending on the funds that we have available. If we don’t have the money to pay a decent transfer fee then we should be doing more to keep Morelos at the club. Yes, his wages would be high but we would still be able to get money in for him if we decided to sell. The total cost of giving him a few thousand more a month would be worth it financially, even if you could argue that his form doesn’t justify it if the alternative is a poorer player.
Also, even if he does stay, I would still like us to add another. We have no idea what sort of shape Kemar Roofe will be in next year or how many games he will be available for. We can’t go into a league campaign again with just two fit strikers, that is a decision that has cost us in the last two seasons and simply isn’t acceptable for a club of our size.
